Dendera Temple from Luxor: half-day trip with a felucca ride or on its own?
Updated October 7, 2026 · 5 min read
If you have more than one day in Luxor, Dendera is worth a half-day trip. The Dendera tour with lunch and a felucca ride costs from €55.87 per person, takes 5 hours and has 4.4 stars from 268 reviews. If you only have one day, skip Dendera and take the full-day shared tour to both banks of the Nile from €25.79: Karnak, the Valley of the Kings and the Hatshepsut temple, 4.6 stars from 2,099 reviews.

The table shows one thing above all: from Luxor, Dendera comes in two formats. One is a short trip of 5 hours, the other a day of 10 to 12 hours. The price rises with the length, and the review base of the long tours is much thinner.
Who Dendera is for
Dendera is a trip for travellers who already have Luxor itself in their plans. The descriptions name the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, and the operator of the half-day tour calls it one of the best-preserved ancient sites in Egypt. That is the operator’s claim, not my own measurement, but it explains why the trip suits anyone who has already seen Karnak and the West Bank and wants one more temple outside Luxor.
How many days you need for that is covered in Luxor in one day or two. What the region offers beyond that, and when temples such as Dendera, Edfu or Philae are worth it, is in What to see in Upper Egypt; I won’t repeat it here.
Who it is not for
If you only have one day in Luxor, Dendera is the wrong choice. Karnak and the West Bank belong in that day, and the tour to both banks covers them in 8 hours for €25.79. How to weigh the two banks against each other is in West Bank or East Bank.
Nor is Dendera the best fit if what you mainly want is to be on the water: the felucca ride is one part of the package here, not its core. For felucca rides on their own, see the felucca category in Luxor.
The half-day tour: what the package names and what stays open
The description of the Dendera tour names a guided visit, an Egyptian lunch and a felucca ride on the Nile, 5 hours in total. It does not say how those hours divide between the journey, the temple, the meal and the boat. Before booking, ask the operator how much time you get at the temple itself, whether admission and hotel pick-up are included and when it starts. That applies to every tour in this article; I give no admission prices or on-site rules because the offer texts say nothing about them.
Adding Abydos: the long day
If you invest a whole day, you get a second destination. According to its description, the private day trip to Abydos and Dendera visits the temple of Seti I at Abydos and the Temple of Hathor at Dendera, takes 10 hours and costs from €76.76. The 4.9 stars come from only 27 reviews; that is a good sign, but not a broad foundation.

The day tour to the temples of Dendara and Abydos covers the same two destinations, costs from €120.34 and has 201 reviews at 4.6 stars, the broadest base among the two-temple tours. Why it costs considerably more than the first, the description does not say; ask the operator. The difference between 5 and 10 hours comes from the second destination. None of the descriptions says how much of that is spent in the vehicle. You will find more day trips and private tours under excursions in Luxor and private tours in Luxor.
On the Nile instead of the road
The Nile cruise to Dendera Temple with lunch is a 12-hour day from €128.94. According to the description, you sail from Luxor to the temple, visit it with a guide, eat from a buffet and have tea at sunset on the sun deck. It has 4.7 stars, but only 10 reviews. For Dendera alone it is the most expensive and longest option; it makes sense if the journey itself is meant to be part of the experience. More in the Nile cruises from Luxor category.

Our recommendation
For most people the half-day tour is the right size: the Dendera tour with lunch and a felucca ride from €55.87. It is the cheapest Dendera tour from Luxor and, with 268 reviews, has the broadest base of any offer that names Dendera. With a total of 5 hours, there is time left for other things in Luxor, depending on the departure. The description does not say what time of day the felucca ride takes place. If Dendera on its own is not worth the effort for you, the tour to both banks is the better choice.
If Abydos interests you and you have a whole day, take the private day trip from €76.76, with the caveat of the small number of reviews. None of this is for you if you only have one day in Luxor: Karnak and the West Bank first, Dendera next time.
