Balloon rides in Luxor for groups: booking together and organising the pick-up
Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read
The balloon ride is usually the first suggestion someone throws into the group chat, and the item on the programme that is hardest to organise. That comes down to the shape of the product: you buy seats, you do not hire a basket. If you are planning for eight, twelve or twenty people – a circle of friends, a club, a company outing, two families meeting up in Luxor – that is exactly where the misunderstandings sit.
As of 16 September 2026 our GetYourGuide stock holds 85 offers for Luxor, 16 of them balloon-related. I went through them asking what they actually promise a group. The answer is shorter than you would expect.
Several paid seats are not a shared flight
The normal case is seat sales. You enter eight people, you pay for eight seats, and all that follows from it is that eight people will be carried that morning. That they will be standing in the same basket while they do it appears in none of the stored offer texts. It is not ruled out – it is not promised.
The one entry that explicitly advertises itself as private is revealing. Tour 330111, “Luxor: All Inclusive Private Small Balloon Ride”, sits in the stock from €343.84 – and is advertised for two people. That is not a group solution, it is the opposite: exclusive, but small. The privately booked balloon for the whole party is not something you will find in our stock.
If “we fly together” genuinely matters to the group, that question belongs before the payment. I would put it in writing, with the number of people and the preferred date, and wait for an answer in writing too. The word “private” in a title is no substitute for that confirmation.
What the stock says about groups – and what it does not
Here the most important information in this article is a blank. Not one of the Luxor balloon offers has a group discount recorded in our stock, no minimum number of people, no required lead time in days and no deposit rule. So I am not going to name a threshold. A sentence like “from ten people it gets cheaper” would be invented, and an invented figure is worse for your budgeting than no figure at all.
What remains are starting prices per person. Tour 460620, “Luxor: Hot-Air Balloon Ride over the Relics of Luxor”, is the most-reviewed pure balloon offer with 4.8 stars from 1,823 reviews and starts at €75.65. Eight people come to €605.20 in starting prices on paper. The same eight on the deluxe sunrise ride 251197 – from €55, 4.7 stars, 340 reviews – would be €440. That is a starting-price calculation and not a booking total: whether the price applies to your date, and whether eight seats are free at the same time, only the booking process will show.
The range upwards is wide. The ride over the Valley of the Kings (322538) sits in the stock from €123.78 with 4.8 stars and 255 reviews – against 251197 that is €68.78 more per person, a good €550 for eight people. Where the difference comes from, the short texts do not say in any reliable way; the comparison of the offers goes into the differences in what is included. For a group kitty I would only take the more expensive entry if somebody can name what you get for it.
Pick-up when you are not all in the same hotel
A group rarely stays under one roof. That is precisely what collides with an appointment that begins before sunrise. Two offers carry the pick-up in their title: 458591 on the West Bank with hotel pick-up, from €62 at 4.7 stars and 318 reviews, and 1129771 with pick-up from €75, the only one to mention VIP transport on request. Which area they collect from, and whether several addresses are served on one morning, is not stated there.
So I would put together a list of all the accommodation with the bank noted, early on, and send the operator the question of whether he can serve them in one run and how much earlier the first address would be. That gap is the point where the mood turns: whoever is collected first may sit in the bus considerably longer than the last person, and in the middle of the night at that.
The calmer option is a shared meeting point you set yourselves and everyone makes their own way to – with two or three hotels within walking distance, often the smaller effort. Whether the operator accepts that is for him to confirm. How to get around Luxor without a vehicle of your own is covered in the notes on Luxor without a car.
One booking or many separate ones
A collective booking in your name keeps communication simple: one contact, one transaction, one confirmation. It also makes you the debtor for the whole sum and the only person allowed to trigger changes. If somebody then wants to rebook at short notice, that hangs on you – on your holiday.
Separate bookings spread money and responsibility across everyone. In exchange you have no assurance that eight separately booked people will be assigned to the same slot, and you find out too late if one of them never completed the process. In that case I would collect the booking references and report them to the operator as a block, asking him to group them.
Either way I would settle beforehand whose phone number is on file with the operator – who, in other words, learns about a cancellation at night and has to pass it on. That is not a formality when the message arrives at half past three in the morning.
When individuals drop out – or the whole morning does
On cancellation deadlines and refunds for partial withdrawals our stock holds no reliable information, so what stands here is only the question and no rule: what happens if two of eight people do not come along – does the price per person stay the same, and until when is the change possible? Ask that before you pay, and in exactly those words.
The second case is the harder one. A slot cancelled because of the weather hits a group harder than a couple, because you usually have only one free morning together. Whether and on what conditions a ride is cancelled or moved is the operator’s decision; I am deliberately not writing a weather rule here, because I cannot back one up. I would put the flight on the earliest suitable morning of your stay, so that a second attempt stays possible – and tell the group beforehand that a replacement date is not guaranteed.
Three hours on paper, 30–45 minutes in the air
The pure balloon offers in our stock are listed throughout with a total duration of 3 hours. The only one to name the actual flying time is 1129771, as a “30- to 45-minute ride”. For planning your day that is the decisive difference: by far the greater part of those three hours is not flying. How the time breaks down exactly, the short texts do not say.
So do not work out a fixed hour by which everyone will be back at the breakfast table. A follow-up appointment the same morning is the most common planning error.
If you want to stay together after landing there are combination offers: 477361 pairs the balloon ride with a full-day tour at 9 hours, from €137.54, 4.7 stars and 674 reviews; 429747 takes in the West and East Banks over 11 hours, from €128.94, 4.5 stars and 437 reviews. An eleven-hour day after a pick-up before sunrise is very long for a mixed group, though. If there are older people or children along I would split it up – the trade-off is set out in the comparison of a balloon with a temple tour or on its own.
When I would advise a group against it
There are two situations in which the balloon ride is the wrong choice. The first: the group is set on standing together in one basket, and nobody has confirmed that. Then you are booking an expectation the product does not carry, and the annoyance lands back on you at the launch site.
The second is more common than people admit. If two or three do not want to fly at all and are only going along so as not to break up the party, you do not have a shared outing, you have an expensive dare. Ask them individually and not in front of the group – in a circle nobody says no. If the answers come back mixed, I would choose an outing that carries everyone and leave the balloon to the people who really want it. For couples who would like to add the flight on separately, the piece on balloon rides for couples is the better starting point.
