Luxor in the evening: floodlit temples, a Nile ride or the light show?

Updated September 16, 2026 · 6 min read

Floodlit row of columns and an obelisk of an Egyptian temple complex in the dark

The day of sightseeing is over, dinner is still open, and on the list are several things that all pass as an evening programme in Luxor. Our GetYourGuide stock of 85 offers, as of 16 September 2026, holds a sound and light show at Karnak Temple, several rides on the Nile and a temple visit in the evening light. The starting prices are close together. That is still a long way from making the three comparable.

Before the question of which offer is best comes another one: can today’s day take one more appointment at all? The answer to that decides more than any review count.

Three evenings that do not do the same job

A sound and light show is a performance. It has a fixed sequence, it works with sound and light, and you move through a floodlit site in a group. You are being entertained; you do not set the pace.

A felucca ride is roughly the opposite. There is no programme, no narrator and nothing competing for your attention. If you experience silence as emptiness, you will spend two hours waiting for something that does not come. If you are looking for exactly that after a loud day, you will get it reliably.

The third kind is the visit itself, moved into the last hour of daylight. Here it is not about effect but about a building under a different light, with explanation. That sits closer to the sightseeing day than to an evening programme, and that can be an advantage or a drawback.

I consider that distinction more important than any price comparison. The three kinds solve different problems – a lower figure is no argument if it solves the wrong one.

The sound and light show: four ways into the same performance

The most-reviewed evening offer in the stock is the sound and light show at Karnak Temple: from €42.98, 4.2 stars from 71 reviews, 2 hours stated duration.

Alongside it stand two private versions. 445700 is called “Luxor: Private Sound & Light Show at Karnak with Transfer”, costs from €33.52 at 4.1 stars from 39 reviews and is likewise scheduled at 2 hours; the short text mentions the show at night and a private transfer from your hotel in Luxor. 1165221 is called “Luxor: Private Sound and Light Show at Karnak with Entry Ticket”, sits at €34.38, but has only 3.5 stars from 10 reviews and lasts 3 hours.

The fourth way in is not an evening programme but a whole day. 313023 combines the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut and the light show into 8 hours from €116.91. Anyone booking that should be clear that the show comes at the end of a full day of sightseeing and not at the start of a free evening.

Why the lower price belongs to the private offer here

Sort these four by price and you get a misleading order. The two private versions with transfer stand at €33.52 and €34.38, below the most-reviewed offer at €42.98. It does not follow that they include less, and just as little that they include more.

With 1165221 the short text names the entry ticket and the private transport explicitly. For the other three our data says nothing on the matter, neither one way nor the other. That is not information, it is a gap. Before paying I would ask specifically: is entry to the performance included in the price, and does “transfer” mean my own address?

The review situation is worth a second look too. 596599 rests its 4.2 stars on 71 responses, 1165221 gets to 3.5 from 10 reviews, and 313023 stands at a flat 5.0 from four voices. Five stars from four reviews are not proof of quality but a chance value that the fifth response can shift considerably.

The language of the performance is the most important booking question

A show that works largely through spoken sound stands or falls with the language it is performed in. If you do not understand it, what is left is floodlit masonry and a voice that tells you nothing. Spending €42.98 on that irritates more the next morning than the amount itself.

This is exactly where our data is thin. Only the private version with an entry ticket names the language of the performance explicitly, and it is English. The other offers are silent on it. Performance times and performance languages change, which is why you will find neither a language schedule nor a start time here. You have to get both settled for your specific date, ideally in writing and with reference to the slot you have booked.

On the Nile, little happens on purpose

The best-rated offer in the entire stock is a private felucca sailing trip at sunset: from €24.93, 4.9 stars from 346 reviews, 2 hours. That combination of a high score and a broad review base is not matched by any other evening offer on our list.

Close behind it is 317062 with hotel pick-up, from €26.65 at 4.6 stars from 268 reviews, with hibiscus tea on board according to the short text. Two offers with a three-figure review count in the same category is a comfortable starting position, because here you do not have to guess.

Two further Nile offers I would treat more cautiously. The romantic dinner on a felucca (1179801) costs from €55.44 for 3 hours and has no reviews; that is not a bad sign, but it is no sign at all. And 600972 combines a felucca ride and the light show into 5 hours from €55.87 at 4.4 stars from four reviews. Five hours is decidedly long for an evening, and the combination puts the quiet version and the loud one back to back of all things.

The temple in the last light

For the third kind the stock holds 1152678, a private sunset tour to Luxor Temple from €26.15, 2 hours, 4.8 stars from four reviews. The short text speaks of golden light on columns and statues, an experienced guide and a door-to-door transfer. Here too the review base carries no statement about reliability, however good the score looks.

What this article does not say: that Luxor Temple is floodlit in the evening or accessible at any particular hour. Our data says nothing about it, and invented visiting times or entrance amounts on site do not help you plan. Whether the site is open at the time you have in mind belongs as the first question in your query to the operator.

If the temples matter more to you than the evening, the comparison with the daytime offer is the more honest one. 514870 takes in Karnak and Luxor Temple, from €44.70 for 4 hours, with 836 reviews at 4.5 stars. That is an entirely different basis for a decision. How to spread the two sites across appointments is covered in the article on the combined tour or separate visits, and further guided tours are on the overview of Karnak and Luxor Temple.

When I would leave the evening free

Two hours at a show are not two hours of performance. The stated total duration contains the drive to the temple, the wait before admission and the way back. So do not count the evening as a short item on the programme but as a full appointment with a pick-up time you are tied to.

Which brings us back to the opening question. If you got up before sunrise for a balloon ride or were out on tour for eight hours, you do not have a free evening tonight, you have the third appointment of the day. In that situation I would book nothing. And if something there must be, then the felucca, because it is the only one of the three that asks nothing of you.

It looks different if the day was quiet anyway, or if the evening was always meant to be the real event. Then a show after dinner works too, and even the five-hour combination of ride and performance is defensible. How much realistically fits into one day can be worked out from the way things divide across one day or two in Luxor and from the three experiences for first-time visitors. Put the evening in last, not first.
